Triumph and Reign O Hearts of Jesus and Mary,

 In All Hearts Everywhere!

Part 2

The Two Hearts United

And now it is apparent that God wanted to go one step further and bring us to the realization of the union existing between the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  It is reported that during World War II, Jesus told the Belgian mystic, Berth Petite: “You must think of the Heart of My Mother in the same way as you think of Mine.  Give yourself to Her Heart, as you give yourself to Mine…By confident consecration to My Mother, the devotion to My Heart will be strengthened and, as it were, completed. This consecration will be according to My promise a renovation for My Church, a renewed strength for Christianity…a source of signal graces for souls…DEVOTION TO HER HEART UNITED TO MINE WILL BRING PEACE, THAT TRUE PEACE SO OFTEN IMPLORED AND YET SO LITTLE MERITIED.”  (emphasis added)

Cardinal Ricardo J. Vidal stated that the devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, many believe, is indeed the devotion of our time.  Pope John Paul II adopted its propagation as a special mission of his pontificate and time and again he manifested his ardent desire to make this devotion known throughout the world.

Although the Hearts of Jesus and Mary have been venerated for centuries, it was not until recently that we have begun to penetrate more deeply into the oneness existing between Them.  Mary’s Heart is what our hearts could have been if there had been no original sin. Her Heart reveals the union that a creature can attain with its God.  Jesus lives and reigns in Her Heart as in that of no other creature because of Her perfect response to Him.  Her heart is thus the most ‘perfect image’ of His Heart that is possible for a creature to attain.  HER HEART IS THEREBY OUR MODEL IN RESPONDING TO HIM AND ALLOWING HIM TO LIVE AND REIGN IN US.

The excellency of the Immaculate Heart of Mary depends in large measure upon Her union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  By Her destiny as Mother of God, Mary has been called to a union with Him far above and beyond that granted to any other creature.  Her Heart echoes all the feelings, desires, sentiments, longings, affections, motivations, and dispositions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Her heart is thus capable of purely loving God more than any other creature in heaven or on earth.

The holiness of the Immaculate Heart of Mary likewise arises from Her most perfect union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Her Heart is as a brilliant mirror reflecting the sanctity of His Heart. His perfections are reproduced in Her Immaculate Heart, although in a finite way, in virtue of Her communion with His Heart.  St. John Eudes exclaimed: “What union what intimacy, what understanding, what correspondence between these two Hearts![35]

He explained in greater detail… “God has united these two hearts so closely that They are always one single Heart in feeling, affection and will.  Moreover Jesus lives and reigns so completely in the Heart of Mary that He is truly the soul of her soul; the Spirit of her spirit; and the Heart of Her heart.”[36]

Before dying Jacinta told Lucia:  “TELL EVERYBODY…THAT THE HEART OF JESUS WANTS THE IMMACULATER HEART TO BE VENERATED AT HIS SIDE.”[37] (emphasis added)

It is of great significance that on May 18, 1936, Sr. Lucia asked Jesus why He would not convert Russia without the Holy Father making the collegial consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and He replied: “Because I want My whole Church to acknowledge that conversion as a triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that it may extend its devotion later on, AND PUT THE DEVOTION TO HER IMMACULATE HEART BESIDE DEVOTION TO MY SACRED HEART.”[38]

This is indeed an awesome statement worth repeating.  So great is Jesus’ desire that the devotion to His Mother’s Immaculate Heart be placed beside devotion to His Sacred Heart that His condition for the conversion of Russia was the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary made by the Pope in union with the bishops of the world.

And remember that in 1993, Sister Lucia reported that there would have been a nuclear war in 1985 if that consecration had not been made in 1984Can we begin now to imagine how much Jesus wants the Immaculate Heart of Mary to be venerated beside His Sacred Heart?  Hence, now is the time to fulfill His request.

The Church has attempted to manifest this union of Their Hearts in a visible manner by moving the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that it is on the day after the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  The two feasts days are now side by side, on the Friday and Saturday after the octave of Corpus Christi.

It is significant that in his Angelus Address of September 15, 1985, Pope John Paul II used the phrase, “that admirable Alliance of The Hearts” in referring to the covenant of love between the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.  And an international symposium on the Alliance of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary was held at Fatima in September of 1986.  The Holy Father summarized its purpose:  It is my prayer that your initiative will make the alliance of the Hearts Jesus and Mary better understood and appreciated by the people of God and thus promote devotion to the Heart of the Son and His Mother in our day.”[39]

Cardinal Sin, the President of the Symposium, stated that it was a response to the Fatima message to not only promote devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, but to unite it more closely with the devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus in order to bring Peace to the worldThe significance of those last few words “to unite it (devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary) more closely with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in order to bring peace to the world” cannot be over-estimated.

As a result of the symposium the Alliance of the Holy Family International was formed in Manila to emphasize THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSECRATION TO THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY -- OF PLACING OUR HEARTS INTO THE

ALLIANCE OF THEIR HEARTS AS ST. JOSEPH DID, THUS SANCTIFYING THE FAMILY AND THE WORLD.  And if ever the family and the world needed to be sanctified, it is now.

Since that time international congresses have been held all over the world--in Moscow, Japan, the United States, Venezuela, Kenya, Fatima, Manila and Rome-- to promote the Alliance of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.  On May 23, 24 and 25, 1995, The International Theological Pastoral Convention on the Alliance of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary was held in Rome.  DURING THIS CONVENTION RENOWNED THEOLOGIANS DECLARED THE ALLIANCE OF THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY AS THE CORE AND THE FOUNDATION OF OUR FAITH AND THE ESSENTIAL THEME OF THE BIBLE.  FURTHERMORE, THEY DECLARED IT TO BE A WAY OF LIFE AND WORTHY OF A LITURGICAL FEAST.  Is it any wonder then why Father Michael O’Carroll in his farewell address said, “I consider this meeting as the most important convention on faith in this century?[40]

COULD ANY THINKING PERSON ANY LONGER IGNORE OR DENY THE NECESSITY OF CONSECRATING HIMSELF OR HERSELF TOTALLY AND FOREVER TO THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY?

We Live in a Dramatic Moment at the Beginning of the Third Millennium

Indeed, we live in a dramatic moment at the dawn of the third millennium. If the revelation of the mysteries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was reserved by God for the latter ages and did not come to light until the seventeenth century; if the consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was reserved for the threshold of the twentieth century; if the establishment of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary throughout

the world was reserved for the twentieth century; if the Consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was also reserved for the twentieth century and if we are now living in the Age of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary  THEN DARE I SUGGEST THAT FROM ALL ETERNITY GOD HAS DESTINED YOU AND ME TO BE ALIVE ON EARTH AT THIS TIME IN HISTORY PRECISELY TO DEVOTE OURSELVES AND TO CONSECRATE OURSELVES TO THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY AND FURTHERMORE TO MAKE THEIR FINAL THRIUMPH AND REIGN THE VERY GOAL AND PURPOSE OF OUR LIVES.

Dare I suggest further that at this moment in time you and I hold THE DESTINY OF THE WORLD IN SOME WAY IN OUR HANDS BECAUSE BY OUR TRUE DEVOTION AND CONSECRATION TO THESE TWO HEARTS WE CAN HASTEN THE DAY OF THEIR FINAL TRIUMPH AND REIGN.  I BESEECH US THAT WE BE NOT LIKE KING LOUIS XIV OF FRANCE WHO DID NOT HEED OR EVEN RECOGNIZE THE HOUR OF HIS DIVINE VISITATION AND THUS BROUGHT DISASTER UPON HIMSELF, HIS COUNTRY AND THE ENTIRE MODERN WORLD.

How poignant to think that today we might have been praying to SAINT Louis XIV if he had fulfilled the divine requests.  And closer to home, think how different the twentieth century would have been if we had heeded the requests from heaven given to us by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima.  What would the twentieth century have been like-no World War II, no Communism or militant atheism spread throughout the world, no vast persecution of the Church, no atomic or nuclear weapons, no slaughter of untold millions of people.  We can hardly imagine what it would have been like…

Consecration to the Hearts of Jesus & Mary

But what does it mean to consecrate ourselves to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary?

The word 'consecrate' means to set apart for holy purposes.  When we consecrate ourselves to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary we are OFFERING TO THEM UNRESERVEDLY ALL THAT WE ARE AND ALL THAT WE DO AND ALL THAT WE HAVE—our thoughts, words, actions, joys and sufferings; our past, present and future; every breath that we draw and every beat of our hearts and every moment of our lives so that whether we work or eat or sleep or pray, all that we are and have and do is offered to Their Hearts AS A HOLOCAUST OF PURE LOVE.

St. Margaret Mary expressed it very beautifully when she said, “Taking your heart as it were in your hands, offer and consecrate it to Our Lord, that He may be forever the sole Owner thereof, that He may reign therein absolutely and may teach you to love Him perfectly.  On awakening, enter into the Sacred Heart of Jesus and consecrate to It your body, your soul, your heart and your whole being so as to live but for Its love and glory alone.  We must not belong to God by halves.  As God gives Himself entirely to the soul He loves, so does He desire to possess the soul’s entire love.” [41]

This total dedication and consecration can best be summed up in two magnificent words spoken by John Paul II in describing his own consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary-- “TOTUS TUUS”. (All Yours)

This consecration to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary is actually a renewal of our Baptismal Promises to renounce Satan and all of his empty promises and to follow Jesus Christ unreservedly.

Scripture is replete with similar exhortations.  “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercy of God that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing unto God, your reasonable service”  (Romans 12:1); “Or know you not, that your members are the temple of the Holy Spirit, Who is in you, Whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought with a great price. Glorify and bear God in your body” (Corinthians 6: 19-20); “And Christ died for all; that they also who live, may not now live to themselves, but unto Him Who died for them, and rose again.”(Corinthians 5:15)

The best proof we can have that we are truly devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and that we love Them and  have consecrated ourselves to Them is by the effects which this devotion and consecration produce.  THE MORE ARDENT THE LOVE AND THE MORE TOTAL THE CONSECRATION, THE MORE PROFOUND WILL BE THE EFFECTS.  Jesus said: “Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.” (Matt. 7:20)

It is important to realize that Jesus has given us His Sacred Heart and His Mother’s Immaculate Heart not only to be our rule of life, but as St. John Eudes so aptly put it, to also be “our very heart, so that as members of Jesus and children of Mary we may share one Heart with Them.”[42]

This immense privilege should help us to ‘enter into Their Hearts’ and perform all of our actions with the holy intentions and motivations which are Theirs.  We should try to ‘enter into’ the love, charity, purity, humility and holiness of Their Hearts so that in all that we are and all that we do we may be filled with Their holy dispositions.  St. Margaret Mary stated it very clearly when she said: “He wishes you to conform your heart to the virtues of His Own.”[43]

As the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a beautiful image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. WE SHOULD STRIVE TO MAKE OUR HEARTS LIVING IMAGES OF HIS.  St. John Eudes described this wonderfully when he wrote: “The Admirable Heart of Mary is the ‘perfect’ image of the most Divine Heart of Jesus.  It is the pattern and model for our own hearts, and all our happiness, perfection and glory consist in striving to transform them into so many living images of the Sacred Heart of Mary, just as her holy Heart is a consummate likeness to the adorable Heart of Jesus.  The sovereign devotion is to imitate what we honor, says St. Augustine (De civit.Itb.8. cap.17); so who can fail to perceive that in encouraging the faithful in devotion to the most amiable Heart of the Mother of God, we are also EXHORTING THEM TO IMITATE THE MOST EMINENT VIRTUES THAT ADORN IT…[44] (emphasis added)

But in order for this to happen, we must ‘DIE TO OURSELVES’-- to that fallen human nature inherited from Adam.  St. Louis de Montfort warned us in his classic, True Devotion to The Blessed Virgin:If we do not die to ourselves, and if our most fervent devotions do not lead us to this necessary and fruitful death, we shall not bear fruit of any worth, and our devotions will prove useless to us.  All our virtues and good works will bear the stain of our own conceit and our own will, and this will make our greatest sacrifices and our most ambitious efforts mere abominations in the eyes of God.  Our death will find us with hands empty of virtues and merits and without a trace of that pure love which is given only to those who have died to themselves…[45]

Jesus Himself also gave us this admonition when He warned, “Amen, amen, I say to you unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die, itself remaineth alone.  But if it dies it bringeth forth much fruit.” (John 12: 24-25)   And John the Baptist cried out: “For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees.  Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.” (Matt 3:10)

St. Margaret Mary wrote: “The further you withdraw from self, the closer you draw to God… We must endeavor to the utmost of our power to enter into the Adorable Heart of Our Lord by… humbly confessing our nothingness, thus losing sight of self entirely.”[46]

It is clear that we must cleanse our hearts from evil and turn away from all sin.  We must fervently ask Jesus to purify us and uproot the evil inclinations in the depths of our hearts while we shun the vanities and seductions of this world and avoid the occasions of sin.  Scripture reaffirms this:  Jesus said, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and will make our abode with him.”(John 14:23) and “My mother and My brothers are they who hear the word of God, and do it.”(Luke 8:21)

At the same time we must implore the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary to take full possession of our hearts and make them truly one with Theirs-having the same thoughts, desires, motivations, attitudes, sentiments and virtues as Theirs.  St. John Eudes wrote: “Each one of us can truly say, ‘The heart of Jesus belongs to me’… to be my refuge and shelter… to be my treasure, but also to be my model and rule of life and actions.”[47]

St. Margaret Mary stated: “Remember that your perfection consists wholly in conforming your life and actions to the sacred maxims of the Heart of Jesus, especially His patience, His meekness, His humility and, His charity.”[48]   As a result, “our interior and exterior life will thus become a living image of His, and as He is the living image of God His Father, so we shall become living images of Him…  We find it easy to imitate those whom we love much.”[49]

Many scripture passages speak of OUR TRANSFORMATION IN CHRIST:

But he who is joined to the Lord is one Spirit” (with Him) (1 Cor 6:17);  “For let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 2:5); “for the temple of God is holy, which you are” (1 Cor.3:17);  “But we all beholding the glory of the Lord, with open face, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory…” (2 Cor. 3:18); and “I live, now not I; but Christ liveth within me...”  (Gal. 2:20)

IN OUR ENDEAVOR TO FORM OUR HEARTS INTO THE IMAGE OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS, WE MUST LOOK TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY-- The only heart of a mere creature formed so closely into the image of His Heart.  St. Louis de Montfort called Her the “Holy of Holies where saints are formed and molded.” [50]

He quoted St. Augustine who called Her the mould of God.  Then he continued:  “She is the mould designed to form and shape God-like creatures.   Whoever is cast in this… mould is quickly formed and molded in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ in him…[51]

Therefore in order that our hearts may become like the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pour them into the mould of Mary, and let us ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus to plunge them, as it were, into His Own Heart, as He did to St. Gertrude and St. Margaret Mary and many of the other saints, for according to St. John Eudes it is “a burning furnace of most pure love for us; a furnace of purifying love...in which the hearts of holy souls are purified more perfectly than gold in the furnace; an illuminating love, which scatters the darkness of hell with which the earth is covered and lets us into the wonderful brilliance of heaven;...a sanctifying love, which destroys sin in our souls in order to establish there the kingdom of grace; a transforming love, which transforms serpents into doves, wolves into lambs, beasts into angels, children of the devil into children of God, children of wrath and malediction into children of grace and blessings; a deifying love which makes gods of men…letting them share in the holiness of God, His mercy, His patience, His goodness, His love, His charity and His other divine perfections…[52]

I suggest to you that if we allow the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary to triumph and reign within us, we will be saints.  And if we allow Them to triumph and reign through us,  we will be Their “apostles.”

The Hearts of Jesus and Mary Triumph and Reign in Us

We have just elaborated on what it means to allow the Hearts of Jesus and Mary to triumph and reign in us, but further revelations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary illustrate this even more. He told her to fear nothing and to trust in Him as her Protector because within her heart He had established His reign of Peace which no one could disturb.  He also told her that He had established in her His reign of Love which would fill her with joy of which no one could deprive her.

To obtain this wonderful state St. Margaret Mary said that His Heart must be substituted for ours.  His will must replace ours so that we offer no resistance to Him.  His thoughts, affections, feelings and desires must take the place of ours.  We must think of nothing except pleasing Him and allowing Him to do all that He wills IN us, WITH us and THROUGH us.  We must make His dispositions our own and completely surrender to Him in order that He alone might illuminate our minds, be the motive of all of our actions and the supreme love of our hearts.  Furthermore, we must allow Him to purify us as gold in the furnace and be wholly offered to His designs.  She explained that He can reign only in truly humble souls and that He will raise us up to union with Himself only as He finds us lowered in our own estimation and humbled before Him.

She went on to say that the Sacred Heart of Jesus wishes His love to insinuate itself into our hearts sweetly and gently, penetrating like oil, spreading like precious balm. The crown, she said, will go neither to the beginners nor to the advanced, but to the victorious-to those who persevere to the end.

In other words, it will go to those whose spiritual house is NOT BUILT ON THE SHIFTING SANDS OF SELF-WILL AND SELF-LOVE, BUT UPON THE UNSHAKABLE FOUNDATION OF SURRENDER TO THE DIVINE WILL AND PURE LOVE FOR GOD.  THESE ARE THEY WHO ALLOW THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY TO TRIUMPH AND REIGN IN THEM.

What awesome thoughts and awesome realities!  You may say, “How can any mere creature live like that?”  We know there is one that lives and has always lived like that-Her Immaculate Heart always in perfect union and conformity with the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  And that is why  He wants Her Heart to be venerated at His side.  And may I suggest to you that God has a right to expect greater saints in the latter ages of the world because of the cumulative effect of grace and holiness throughout the history of the Church.  If we are indeed now living in the Age of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, THEN OUR HEARTS MUST BECOME A MICROCOSM OF THE FULFILMENT OF THEIR AGE WHEN THEY TRIUMPH AND REIGN IN ALL HEARTS EVERYWHERE.  St. Paul spoke of the early Christians as the first fruits of those that believe.  Many will come after, but we are the first, he said. MUST NOT WE BE THE FIRST FRUITS OF THE AGE OF THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY BY ALLOWING THEM TO TRIUMPH AND REIGN IN US AND THROUGH US?

We know that Jesus made several promises to St. Margaret Mary for those who were devoted to His Sacred Heart.  He promised that those who were tepid would grow FERVENT and those who were fervent would grow QUICKLY to HIGH PERFECTION. And the two key words are QUICKLY and HIGH.  We know that Pope Pius XII affirmed this when he wrote,  “It is altogether impossible to enumerate the heavenly gifts which devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has poured out on the souls of the faithful, purifying them, offering them heavenly strength, ROUSING THEM TO THE ATTAINMENT OF ALL VIRTUES.”[53]  (emphasis added)

And Jesus has indeed given us many helps to holiness of life.

The Enthtronement

St. Margaret Mary wrote “Our Divine Lord assured me that He takes singular pleasure In being honored under the figure of His Heart, the image of which He wishes to be exposed in public in order to touch the unfeeling hearts of men.  HE PROMISED THAT HE WOULD POUR OUT IN ABUNDANCE INTO THE HEARTS OF ALL THOSE WHO WOULD HONOR HIS HEART ALL THE GIFTS WITH WHICH IT IS FILLED, AND THAT EVERYWHERE THIS IMAGE IS EXPOSED AND HONORED IT WOULD DRAW DOWN ALL KINDS OF BLESSINGS." [54]  (emphasis added)

Pope Benedict XV stated that the Enthronement is the installation of the image of the Sacred Heart in a place of honor in the home as on a throne, in such a way that Our Divine Savior, Jesus Christ, is seen to reign in each Catholic home.  This definition was repeated verbatim by Pope Pius XI and Pope Pius XII.  It is important to realize that the Enthronement is not just a beautiful ceremony.  It is an outward visible recognition and sign of the reign of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in our hearts and homes and lives.

According to Fr. Mateo Crawley-Boevey, SS.CC., the Enthronement signified a “DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART WHICH LED TO THE TRANSFORMATION OF ONE’S ENTIRE LIFE.”[55]

In a letter written by Pope Benedict XV to Fr. Mateo, the Holy Father said, in speaking of the Enthronement, that “it propagates above all things, the Christian spirit in the home by setting up in each family the reign and the love of Jesus Christ…To follow Christ is to be permeated with a lively constant faith, which not only acts upon the mind and the heart, but likewise governs and directs our conduct.”[56]

Pope Paul VI in a letter dated May 25, 1965, to the Superiors of Religious Orders dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus wrote: “(You) are for modern men an example and eminent witness why they should cultivate this excellent form of piety in order to draw from it ‘ever greater strength to conform their lives readily to the Gospel, to amend their conduct zealously, and to carry out the precepts of the divine law’…. Thus, it is absolutely necessary that the faithful venerate and honor this Heart… and they must learn perfectly from Him how they are to live in order to answer the demands of the time…[57]

From all of this it can be seen that the Enthronement in our homes must bring about an INTERIOR CONVERSION IN OUR HEARTS AND AN ENTIRE TRANSFORMATION IN OUR LIVES WHICH WILL MANIFEST ITSELF IN OUR DAILY CONDUCT, THEREBY GLORIFYING THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND GIVING WITNESS TO THE GOSPEL IN A GODLESS SOCIETY.

If ever we needed to manifest in our daily conduct the transformation that has taken place in our lives as a result of our consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and thereby give witness to the Gospel in a Godless society, the TIME IS NOW!

Wonderfully in recent years there has been a movement to enshrine the images of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary not only in homes, but in churches, schools, hospitals, businesses, prisons, dioceses and nations as well.  This is an outward sign of fulfilling their desire to TRIUMPH and REIGN IN ALL HEARTS EVERYWHERE!

The Sacred Eucharistic Heart of Jesus

St. Paul said that where sin abounds, GRACE ABOUNDS EVEN MORE. (emphasis added).  It is related in Scripture that when Satan roars the loudest, God will ‘raise up a standard against him.’  We are aware that we live in an age of unprecedented evil, THEREFORE WE ALSO LIVE IN AN AGE OF UNPRECEDENTED GRACE.  About one hundred years ago, Pope St. Pius X observed that there are many ways by which we can become saints.  One is by great suffering and tribulation, but we shrink from it.  Another is by austerity and penance, but we are afraid of it.  He concluded that the easiest and most efficacious way to become a saint was by receiving Holy Communion frequently, while of course being in the state of grace.  He thereby lowered the age for children to receive their First Holy Communion.  And he did something else which was even more momentous.  He made DAILY Holy Communion available to members of the Church which was unheard of until then.

We know that the Second Vatican Council did something equally wonderful.  The Council made it possible for the faithful to receive Holy Communion twice in one day if they attended an extra Mass for a special occasion.  And when the New Code of Canon Law was promulgated in 1983, permission was given to receive Holy Communion twice in one day if they attended two Masses without the necessity of a special occasion and not one Mass immediately following another.

Jesus knows the evil age in which we are living and He makes His Sacred Eucharistic Heart available to us on a daily basis, even twice a day-if we come to receive Him in the state of grace. Is it any wonder then that God has a right to expect greater saints in the latter ages of the Church with such awesome grace so readily available to us?

Several hundred years ago a miracle took place when Mass was offered at Lanciano, Italy-the Host became Flesh with drops of Blood.  This has been preserved in a special reliquary and in the 1970’s the Vatican requested that there be a scientific analysis of the Tissue.  The research was done by an agnostic scientist who, after he had completed his task, wired back to the Vatican this awesome message: “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”  He explained that the tissue was myocardial (human heart) tissue and the blood was human blood-AB type.  So Jesus literally gives us His Sacred Eucharistic Heart in Holy Communion-an awesome reality!

In 1981, Pope John Paul II established a perpetual Eucharistic adoration chapel at the Vatican where the Blessed Sacrament (the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus) would be perpetually exposed for adoration.  And he requested that Catholic churches throughout the world would do likewise.  Since that time thousands of these chapels have been established all over the world where the Body, the Blood, the Soul and Divinity of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is adored around the clock.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus told St. Margaret Mary that wherever an image of His Sacred Heart was exposed and honored, He would pour out all kinds of blessings.  IMAGINE HOW MANY GRACES POUR FORTH NOT FROM JUST AN IMAGE OF HIS SACRED HEART, BUT FROM HIS SACRED EUCHARISTIC HEART ITSELF WHEN IT IS EXPOSED AND ADORED IN ALL THE Eucharistic Adoration chapels of the world!  St. Margaret Mary cried out, “Who can prevent us from becoming saints?[58]  How appropriate these words are today when God is pouring out unprecedented graces upon the whole world.

We Manifest Our Love for Them and Make Reparation to Them.

By true devotion and consecration to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary we manifest our love for Them and make reparation for the offences and indifferences which are committed against ThemIt was above all to manifest His burning love for us that the Sacred Heart of Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary asking for a return of loveIt was on the Feast of St. John the Evangelist in 1673 that He came to her and said, “My Divine Heart is so inflamed with love for men…that being unable any longer to contain within Itself the flames of Its burning Charity, it must spread them abroad by thy means, and manifest Itself to them in order to enrich them with precious treasures which are revealed to thee…[59]

In His second great vision He complained of the ingratitude with which His burning love was repaid and said: “I feel this more than all I suffered in My Passion…The sole return they make for all My eagerness to do them good, is to reject and treat Me with coldness.  Do thou at least console Me as far as thou art able.”[60]

In a heart-rendering plea He said, Behold how sinners treat Me…  My daughter, wilt thou give Me thy heart and ease My suffering love which every one despises? and “I wish thy heart to serve Me as a refuge wherein I may withdraw and take My delight when sinners persecute Me and drive Me from theirs.” [61]   He asked her to receive Him in Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays in the spirit of love and reparation to ‘repair’ for the sins of the world.

On June 13, 1917, when Our Lady appeared at Fatima, She opened Her hands and in front of Her right hand was a heart encircled by thorns which appeared to have pierced it.  Lucia said, “We understood that it was the Immaculate Heart of Mary, outraged by the sins of humanity, who wishes reparation.”[62]

On December 10, 1925, when the Blessed Mother and the Child Jesus appeared to Sister Lucia, Jesus said to her, Have compassion on the Heart of thy most Holy Mother covered with thorns which ungrateful men are thrusting into it at every moment without anyone making an effort to withdraw them by acts of reparation.”

Then the Blessed Mother said to her: “See my daughter, My Heart covered with thorns that ungrateful men are pressing into it at every moment by their blasphemies and acts of ingratitude.”[63] In the vision of the Most Holy Trinity with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which took place on June 13, 1929, Our Lady not only requested the papal consecration of Russia in union with the bishops of the world.  She also asked for reparation.

INDEED, IT WOULD BE FOOLHARDY TO BELIEVE THAT ALL IS WELL WITH THE WORLD.  The day after the papal consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary at Fatima in 1982, Sister Lucia is reported to have said that it would have its effect.  BUT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN WORLD PEACE THE ‘APOSTLES’ OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA WOULD HAVE MUCH WORK TO DO.

We are well aware that the forces of evil rage on every side escalating crime and violence and revolution and murder of the unborn; proliferating nuclear weapons throughout the world; destroying homes and families and immortal souls; mocking God and His Holy Church and the vicar of Jesus Christ on earth.

We are reminded of Jesus’ message to Sister Lucia in 1939 when He commanded her to ask incessantly for Holy Communions of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary because the sins of the world were so great that the time would come when His justice would fall upon the world.  Dare we hesitate any longer?  Dare we continue to ignore the requests of the Most Loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary?

We have witnessed God’s power in the dissolution of the Communist Empire in Europe.  Can we not expect to witness even greater marvels of His Love if we not only consecrate ourselves totally and forever to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, but also prove our love for Them by fulfilling Their requests-receiving Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays in a spirit of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and by going to confession, receiving Holy Communion, praying five decades of the rosary and meditating for fifteen minutes on its mysteries on five consecutive First Saturdays—all with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

CLEARLY, NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE REPARATION TO THESE TWO MOST LOVING HEARTS IN ORDER TO BRING THE ‘ERA OF PEACE’ WHICH OUR LADY OF FATIMA PROMISED WHEN SHE SAID THAT HER IMMACULATE HEART WOULD TRIMUMPH IN THE END AND AN ‘ERA OF PEACE’ WOULD BE ACCORDED TO THE WORLD.  WE KNOW THIS WILL ONLY HAPPEN WHEN THE HEART OF HER DIVINE SON REIGNS IN HEARTS EVERYWHERE.

What a privilege it is to make reparation to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary by our love and consecration to Them.  Jesus told St. Margaret Mary: “Behold how sinners treat Me…My daughter, wilt thou give Me thy heart and ease My suffering love which every one despises?” and “I wish thy heart to serve Me as a refuge wherein I may withdraw and take My delight when sinners persecute and drive Me from theirs.”[64]

Love for One’s Neighbor and Unity Among People.

Pope Pius XII wrote in Hauretis Aquas:  “Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus… is directed towards the Love of God for us, in order to adore it, give thanks to it, and to live so as to imitate It.  It has this in view as the end to be attained: that we bring that love by which we are bound to God and to the rest of men to perfect fulfillment by carrying out more eagerly the new Commandment which the Divine Master gave to His Apostles… ‘that you love one another as I have loved you.’"[65]

We know that Jesus said the two greatest Commandments were love of God and love of neighbor.  (Matt. 22:37-40)  He also said: “By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love one for another”  (John 13:35);   “This is My Commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12);  “Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you.  Bless them that curse you, and pray for them that calumniate you…As you would that men should do to you, do you also to them in like manner.” (Luke 6:27-28, 31)

Thus, a most practical consequence of true devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary should be true love of our neighbor and unity among us.  St. Peter wrote: “Be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another…” (1Peter 3:8) St. Paul said: “Fulfill ye my joy, that you be of one mind, having the same charity, being of one accord, agreeing in sentiment.  Let nothing be done through contention, neither by vain glory; but in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves.” (Phil. 2:2-3)

The entire thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians expresses this love and closes with these striking words: “And now there remains, faith, hope and charity, these three, but the greatest of these is charity.” (1 Cor. 13:13) It is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles that “…the multitude of believers had but one heart and one soul.” (Acts 4:32)

St. Margaret Mary wrote: “Plunge yourself often into the charity of that lovable Heart so that you may never act towards your neighbor in a manner which may, in the least, wound that virtue, never doing to others what you would not wish done to yourself…[66]

Pope Pius XII wrote that “the practice of devotion to the Heart of Jesus (is)…the source of unity, salvation and peace.”[67]   This is so precisely because It is the source and symbol of love.

We Become Channels of The Divine Mercy.

We discover that the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus finds fitting expression in the devotion to the Divine Mercy, FOR THAT SACRED HEART IS THE FOUNTAIN OF INFINITE LOVE AND MERCY POURED OUT UPON THE WORLD.

On February 22, 1931, Jesus appeared to Saint Faustina Kowalska with two rays emanating from His Heart… one red and the other pale.  He explained to her that these rays signified the Blood which is the life of souls and the water which cleanses them:  “These two rays issued forth from the depths of My tender Mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross.[68]   Sometime later He said to her, I have opened My Heart as a living fountain of Mercy.  Let all souls draw life from it…”[69]

The Immaculate Heart of Mary, immersed in the Heart of Her Divine Son has the GREATEST CAPACITY OF ANY PURELY HUMAN HEART TO CONTAIN AND TO DISTRIBUTE THE DIVINE MERCY flowing from His Heart.  Hence, we fittingly bestow upon Her the awesome title of ‘Mother of Mercy.’  She Herself confirmed this when She appeared one day to Saint Faustina and said, “I am not only the Queen of Heaven, but also the Mother of Mercy…[70]

In some way our hearts, too, must mirror Her Heart as we immerse them in the Sacred Heart of Jesus where we will experience His unfathomable mercy toward us and toward the whole world.  We must also trust in His Mercy and become messengers of It to a sinful generation laden with guilt which often despairs of divine forgiveness.  GOING EVEN FURTHER, OUR HEARTS, IN SOME WAY MIRRORING THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, MUST ALSO BECOME CHANNELS OF HIS DIVINE MERCY FLOWING OUT FROM US TO OTHERS IN DEEDS OF MERCY.

Jesus told Saint Faustina: “I demand from you deeds of mercy which are to arise out of love for Me.  You are to show mercy to your neighbor always and everywhere.[71]   In scripture it is recorded that we will be judged on this very point. Jesus told His followers that when He comes in majesty for the final judgment, He shall separate the sheep from the goats.  To the sheep on His right He shall say, “Come ye blessed of My Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, you gave Me to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in; naked and you covered Me; sick and you visited Me;  I was in prison and you came to Me…  Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to Me.”  (Matt 25: 34-36, 40)

As we fulfill His command then our world will begin to be progressively transformed into what Pope John Paul II referred to as “a ‘civilization of love’ founded on the universal values of peace, solidarity, justice and liberty, which find their full attainment in Christ,”[72]  a civilization based on the Gospel of Life to counteract the ‘culture of death’ so prevalent today and overcome the ‘crisis of civilization’ caused by its alienation from God

We Become ‘Apostles’ of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

When we consecrate ourselves totally to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary we desire Them to triumph and reign not only in our hearts and homes and lives, but ALSO IN THE HEARTS AND HOMES AND LIVES OF ALL PEOPLE EVERYWHERE AND IN ALL THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD.  Ours are the sentiments of Pope St. Pius X when he exclaimed, “O Divine King, we desire that Thou be Master of all.  We acknowledge and publicly proclaim Thy rights over society, and we desire that they be solemnly recognized by the whole world.[73]

Pope John Paul II clearly emphasized the urgent necessity for a “new evangelization” at the beginning of the third millennium--a proclamation of the Gospel attuned to the needs of a new generation and a response to the new challenges faced by the Church in the contemporary world.

The new evangelization must reach entire peoples and nations once rich in faith but which have lost their Christian heritage and have become progressively de-Christianized in recent times.  It must also reach large sectors of the world which have never been won for the Heart of Jesus Christ.

He assured us that the new evangelization “will show its authenticity and unleash all of its missionary force when it is carried out through the gift not only of the word proclaimed but of the word lived[74] as St. Francis of Assisi put it so aptly many centuries ago when he asserted that the faith is never taught but rather caught.

Hence, we see the absolute necessity of our total consecration to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and the absolute necessity of allowing Their Hearts to triumph and reign in us and through us.  LIKEWISE, WE SEE THE ABSOLUTE NECESSITY OF COMMITTING OURSELVES AS ‘APOSTLES’ OF THEIR HEARTS IN ORDER TO EXTEND THEIR TRIUMPH AND REIGN.

May our hearts so burn with the desire to make Them known and loved that we will cry out with St. Margaret Mary: “Why cannot I make known to the whole world those treasures of graces which are stored up in the Heart of Jesus and which He is willing to pour out so plentifully upon those who are devoted to Him!  By means of this devotion He intends to preserve souls from destruction and to establish in them the reign of His love, which will suffer no one of those consecrated to It to perish.”[75]

She also declared that Jesus told her she must not keep these graces to herself but distribute them to others because by this means many souls would be saved.  Over six and one half billion people now inhabit the earth and the important question has to be “where will all of us spend eternity?”  Fr. Mateo, the great apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus exclaimed that we must be saints in order to be apostles.  But we must also be apostles in order to be saints.  In other words THERE CAN BE NO SAINT WHO IS NOT AN APOSTLE.

St. Margaret Mary said, “There is nothing sweeter and milder or stronger and more efficacious than the gentle unction of the burning charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to convert the most hardened souls and to penetrate the most unfeeling hearts.”[76]  She added, “Let us entreat Him to establish His reign in all hearts.  Let us contribute thereto with all our power.  In order to do this let us spare neither life nor possessions.”[77]

She said Jesus informed Her that this devotion is as a final effort of His love which wishes to favor human beings in these last centuries “with this loving redemption, in order to withdraw them from the empire of Satan which He intends to destroy and to replace it with the reign of His love and thus, through His grace, to bring many souls to eternal salvation.”[78]  She added: “The devil has a most intense fear of the devotion to this most loving Heart because of the multitude of souls that will be saved.”[79]

She declared that there was nothing she would not do or suffer in order to make His Heart reign in all hearts.  She emphasized that the Sacred Heart of Jesus desires to establish His reign of love in every heart and that she would willingly die in order to bring this about.

St. Margaret Mary revealed to us that the Sacred Heart of Jesus so greatly desires this that He promised great rewards to those who devote themselves to making Him known and loved according to the means of light which he grants them.  She explained, “as to those who devote themselves to making Him known and loved, if I could and were permitted to express what He has revealed to me of the rewards they will receive from this Adorable Heart you would then say with me ‘Happy are they whom He will employ in the execution of His designs.”[80]   She added, “The reason why I am not permitted to speak of the rewards He promises to those whom He will employ in this holy work is that they may act without any other motive than that of His glory and for love of Him alone, BUT THEIR NAMES WILL BE WRITTEN IN HIS HEART NEVER TO BE BLOTTED OUT.”[81] (emphasis added)

If we become ardent apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and we spread this devotion and the Consecration to these Two Hearts trusting in His Heart to magnify and multiply our little efforts and endeavors, can we not then be hopeful that the third millennium will witness the triumph and reign of Their Hearts in all hearts everywhere?

The Triumph and Reign of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT WE ARE NOW LIVING IN THE AGE OF THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY.  We know that at Paray-le-Monial in the seventeenth century the Sacred Heart of Jesus assured St. Margaret Mary that He would reign through His Heart, in spite of His enemies.  At Fatima in the twentieth century, the Blessed Virgin Mary assured the children that Her Immaculate Heart would triumph in the end.

By our true devotion and consecration to these Two Hearts we can hasten the day of Their final triumph and reign!  As we allow Them to triumph and reign ever more and more in our own hearts and lives, we can help extend Their triumph and reign in the hearts and lives of people everywhere.

Then in the midst of a godless age we will give witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We will manifest His Heart to an unbelieving generation which will know that He lives and reigns because they will see Him living and reigning in us-- hopefully in some way as He lives and reigns in the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Jesus told us, “You are the light of the world, a city seated on a mountain cannot be hid…So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify Your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5: 14, 16) St. Paul admonished us to “be blameless, and sincere children of God without reproof, in the midst of a crooked and

perverse generation among whom you shine as lights in the world holding forth the Word of Life to My glory in the day of Christ.” (Philippians 2:15, 16)

MIGHT I SUGGEST THAT THIS IS THE MOMENT OF OUR DIVINE VISITATION.  My question now to you is this:  What could the Hearts of Jesus and Mary do in us and through us if we would put ourselves entirely at Their disposal?  If we would consecrate ourselves totally and forever to Them?  Would they make of us greater saints than ever before in the history of the Church?  Would we be fervent souls who mount quickly to high perfection?  Would They make of us great apostles of their Two Hearts? As we stand at the beginning of the new millennium the destiny of the world for generations to come and the salvation of billions of souls depend in a certain sense upon us, upon you and me.  It is an awesome thought, an awesome reality and an awesome responsibility.  We might shrug our shoulders and say, “Well, I was not around when King Louis XIV brought disaster upon himself and his kingdom and the whole modern world by not obeying the wishes of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ” or “I was not even born when the Immaculate Heart of Mary came to Fatima so I am not responsible for the catastrophic history of the twentieth century.”

BUT NOW, MY DEAR PEOPLE, GOD HAS DESTINED YOU AND ME TO BE ALIVE ON EARTH IN THIS MOST DECISIVE AND PRECARIOUS MOMENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD AND THE HISTORY OF THE CHURCH.  THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY DEPEND UPON US and never before in the history of the world and the history of the Church have the stakes been so high.  The eternal destiny of over seven billion souls hangs in the balance.  And never before in the history of the world has humankind lived in such a dangerous and precarious and perilous time in which nuclear, chemical and biological warfare have the unprecedented destructive power of obliterating whole populations in a matter of days or hours or minutes

I submit to you that NOW is the time to consecrate ourselves totally and forever to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, to place ourselves totally at Their disposal so that They can work in us and through us to bring about Their triumph and reign.  Then They will be able to say of us what St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “You are our epistle written in our hearts, which is known and read by all men.  Being manifested that you are the epistle of Christ ministered by us, and written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the Living God, not in tablets of stone, but in the fleshly tablets of the heart.”(2 Cor.3:2-3

Let us pray together this beautiful prayer of St. John Eudes: “O Blessed Virgin Mary, I humbly beseech Thee, by Thy Immaculate Conception and through Thy pure Heart, to take full possession of my heart.  Give it completely to Thy Divine Son and beg Him to banish from it all sin and to establish in it forever the perfect reign of His Divine love.[82]

Let us also pray together this beautiful prayer of Cardinal Newman.  “Jesus, flood my soul with Your Spirit and Life.  Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may be a radiance of Yours.  Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your Presence in my soul.  Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus!

In conclusion, let us consecrate ourselves totally and forever to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

O MOST LOVING HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY!  WE VENERATE YOU.  WE LOVE AND HONOR YOU.  WE GIVE AND CONSECRATE OURSELVES TO YOU FOREVER.  RECEIVE US AND POSSESS US ENTIRELY.  PURIFY, ENLIGHTEN AND SANCTIFY US SO THAT WE MAY LOVE YOU, JESUS, WITH THE HEART OF MARY AND LOVE YOU, MARY, WITH THE HEART OF JESUS.

O HEART OF JESUS LIVING IN MARY AND BY MARY!  O HEART OF MARY LIVING IN JESUS AND FOR JESUS!   O HEART OF JESUS PIERCED FOR OUR SINS AND GIVING US YOUR MOTHER ON CALVARY!  O HEART OF MARY PIERCED BY SORROW AND SHARING IN THE SUFFERINGS OF YOUR DIVINE SON FOR OUR REDEMPTION.  O SACRED UNION OF THESE TWO HEARTS!  PRAISED BE THE GOD OF LOVE WHO UNITED THEM TOGETHER!  MAY HE UNITE OUR HEARTS AND EVERY HEART SO THAT ALL HEARTS MAY LIVE IN UNITY IN IMITATION OF THAT SACRED UNITY WHICH EXISTS BETWEEN THESE TWO HEARTS.

TRIUMPH, O SORROWFUL AND IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY!  REIGN, O MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS!  IN OUR HEARTS, IN OUR HOMES AND FAMILIES, IN YOUR CHURCH, IN THE LIVES OF ALL THE FAITHFUL, IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO AS YET DO NOT KNOW YOU, AND IN ALL THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD.  ESTABLISH IN THE HEARTS OF ALL PEOPLE THE SOVEREIGN TRIUMPH AND REIGN OF YOUR TWO HEARTS SO THAT THE EARTH MAY RESOUND FROM POLE TO POLE WITH ONE CRY:  ‘BLESSED FOREVER BE THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS AND THE SORROWFUL AND IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY!”

EPILOGUE

O Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

O Hearts united in pure love

Set the hearts of all of us on fire

Enkindled from Your Hearts above

O Heart of Mary living in Jesus

O Heart of Jesus in Mary

Make all of our hearts like unto Your Hearts

In peace, love and humility

Our sins pierced Your loving Heart, O Jesus

O Heart of Mary pierced by pain

Two Hearts united in untold sorrow

Let us not offend You again

Triumph, rule and reign, O Hearts beloved

In all hearts everywhere

Manifest now Your sovereign power

As well as Your merciful care

So the earth may resound from pole to pole

With this most magnificent cry

“Blest be the Hearts of Jesus and Mary!”

Now while we live and when we die

WE CONSECRATE OURSELVES TO YOU FOREVER

O SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY

WE WANT ALL HEARTS TO LOVE YOU, AND TO PRAISE

YOU

BOTH NOW AND IN ETERNITY
