Finding God
in Anxiety& Depression
Fr Antonio Ritaccio
CTS

This is a very useful and practical guide for those who suffer from anxiety and those who are called to help them. The author rightly notes that those overwhelmed in the darkness of their mental health condition can easily be robbed of any hope as panic gives way to hopelessness. They may feel that they are alone in their suffering. But as children of God, they can be sure that Jesus is there in their darkness.

The author also notes that the power of forgiveness can never be overestimated. He cites St Maria Goretti and St Maximilian Kolbe as examples. Forgiveness is the great spiritual weapon against the evil one. Indeed secular psychologists have discovered a forgiveness therapy! Likewise, no one should despair of being forgiven.

What should we do when we don't have the strength to carry our crosses? The author notes that the Stations of the Cross is an excellent devotion which always reminds us that our crosses when united to the Cross of Christ leads us to heaven.

When we realize that we are passionately loved by God, we can always be sure that we are never alone. This is especially so when we pray. The author gives a brief overview of different kinds of prayer: vocal, meditative and contemplative. The author rightly notes that prayer is not a relaxation exercise nor an emptying of the mind.

While medical interventions are sometimes necessary, faith is always necessary.
